Homesteads Home in the Snow Copyright 2007 Eastlake Design Studio

The wisdom of using native building materials is showcased in the construction of the Cumberland Homesteads National Historic District.

Charming bungalows designed by William Macy Stanton for the 1930's era New Deal Project called the Cumberland Homesteads are located near our shop.  The local builders used hewn white oak timbers mortised into beams to frame stone fireplaces and major areas in the home.

Native stone was used to build the outer walls and chimneys.  Rustic oak flooring, lovely pine paneling, and the passing years have created an attractive patina which provides a warm and comfortable living space 70+ years later.

Mr. Stanton's home designs demonstrate attention to detail, harmony with the environment, visual interest and the use of local building materials.

If visiting our area please stop at the Homesteads Tower Museum and Homesteads House Museum to learn more about this unique historic community.

Timber Frame Structures
        for Outdoor Living ~

Outdoor living spaces are coming back.  They were very popular early in the 20th century, but air-conditioning came into our lives….. If well built and positioned, a lovely outdoor structure can bring hours of pleasure while being useful at the same time.  We have many plans for pergolas, outdoor dining pavilions, park shelters, arbors, and anything else deemed worthy of timber framing.

Pergola Addition
Lakeside Covered Dock We respect and admire the beauty and common sense approach to building with native trees and stone while creating a resting place to shelter from a spring rain or sit and contemplate nature.  With correct design and forethought you don’t need pressure treated building materials.  Natural timbers, properly protected, age gracefully.
You’ve seen these wonderful old picnic shelters and cabins in our National and State Parks.  They are solid and inviting while blending in with their surroundings.  The wood is usually stained a dark brown and most of the time native stone is used in the foundation or halfway up the walls.  These marvelous structures were built by the CCC’s (Civilian Conservation Corp) during the 1930’s.  Some of our favorites are found in Yellowstone National Park where large boulders cascade down at the corners. They were constructed throughout America and many still exist here in Appalachia.

Timber Frame Pavilion PlansHomestead Timber Frames has designed a 20’ x 40’ heavy timber pavilion that revives the 1930’s Camp architectural elements.  This shelter can be the center of your park or private compound to enjoy for decades.  The rustic look will meld into its surroundings as if it sprang from the earth on a moonlit night - unnoticed till you arrived…..

If your plans call for a large park shelter, give us a call to see if we can create this massive welcoming structure for your project.

Picnic Shelter Homestead Timber Frames has the skill and desire to create outdoor structures built with heavy timbers.  Bandstands, outdoor dining pavilions for restaurants, church arbors – you name it and we can help make it come true.  They will last for generations and grow more beautiful with age.

Our shop can accommodate the wood species your project requires or we can point you to a few choices to consider.  All of these outdoor structures count on well planned foundations and roof overhangs for protection.

We can work with state parks, commercial, private projects, or community buildings.  Give our office a call to learn of the many opportunities for timber framed pavilions.

This very flexible hammer beam design can be also be used as a striking entrance to commercial and residential buildings as well as any type of outdoor structure. If this appealing design fits something you have in mind, give us a call or please contact us.
