Cabin Addition on River Collins

Crane boom over cabin.
Imagine a Great Room addition extending out into the tree tops with a view of the river below. In this design there will be a walk-in Inglenook fireplace on the back wall with large windows along the opposite walls bringing the outdoors in. You can step out onto the wide veranda style porch to catch the breeze through double French doors. Wide plank floors spread with colorful rugs will create a warm and welcoming atmosphere for the large family gatherings this room was designed for. A balcony at the end of the room next to the original two story cabin will take you to the upper guest bedrooms at the end of the day. Our thoughtful clients wanted local building materials which they've chosen with care. Lots of Crab Orchard stone will be laid that will compliment the natural woods within the house.

Crane set up in front of the cabin.
Ridge and purlins are next.
Finished oak timber frame addition.
The mistress of this house is a published poet and wrote down how the timber frame raising touched her life.

Homage
I.

The timber frames are now in place,
hoisted by crane and strapping young men -
Four bents, 4000 pounds each
arched to the heavens,
Cathedral among green trees.

These white oak grew hard,
Were harvested,
Then crafted
artfully, tenderly -
Stout beams standing with cross supports
like arms banded.

Here inside these Rock Island woods -
kindred maple, other oak, and sassafras -
Troy makes his way to the highest peak of timber,
crawls determinedly to set a Juniper bough.
Ancient blessing.

“Topping Out” it is called,
valuing what was -
life that grew
valuing what is -
life that endures
generation to generation.

II.

The day is nearly spent.
Trees grow dark, as light fades.
A golden rim hallowing the moment
now pales the horizon
above the River Collins.

We came together, you and I,
-Building crews, neighbors
Family, old friends -
Shared a common meal
beneath these sacred trees.
Shared even more –

History and prayers, laughter and thanksgiving
Gifts from our souls.
