Smart Hybrid Timber Frame
Design

The panoramic views
presented a gorgeous setting in which to
raise this hybrid timber frame. We
accomplished it in less than six hours. It
was fun to design, fun to build, and fun to
put up. Jim and Carol came to us with a
modest budget, while set on an Oak timber
frame in the main living area of their home.
A simple hybrid design was agreed upon, a
local contractor was found and in less than
a year, Jim and Carol moved in. They are
proud of not going over their budget and
especially pleased with the results. As they
will attest, a timber frame home can be
affordable. It's all in the planning.

A cathedral ceiling was a must, but not too tall.
Sheetrock was chosen to accent the timbers. The light
fixtures are heirloom ship wheels from Massachusetts -
Carol's father and grandfather were fishermen.

Jim and Carol use a small woodstove as an alternate heat
source which also creates a cozy corner in the living
area. The open floor plan allows views from the kitchen.
The two wings conventionally built off each side of the
main living area serve as bedrooms and craft rooms.

Carol's kitchen has see through glass doors on the upper
curio cabinet to house her antique glassware collection.
She loves the openness and balance of her well designed
kitchen where she excels in Italian cooking.

Large windows look out through the over sized porch and
to the vista beyond. The porch is a favorite for outdoor
living with room for cooking, relaxing, and dining.

Jim and Carol feel they have the modest home they've
dreamed of for several years in one of the prettiest
places on earth to live - the Tennessee Cumberland
Plateau. And they got their timber frame, too!
